How To Use Retro-Brite

3 Easy Steps to Use Retro-Brite

1. Apply & Cover

Remove electrical components and clean the plastic thoroughly with household cleaners. While wearing rubber gloves, brush or pour a liberal amount of Retro-Brite to yellowed area. Place in plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap.

2. Expose to Sunlight

Place item in direct sunlight for 8-12 hours (temperature of 40°F or above). Periodically check to ensure Retro-Brite covers all yellowed areas. If not, redistribute or add additional Retro-Brite.

3. Wash & Dry

While wearing rubber gloves and eye protection, wash and dry components. If desired whitening effect is not obtained, repeat the process as more exposure to sunlight will continue to brighten the plastic.

Pro Tips

1. Place the item in a plastic bag first, then pour in Retro-Brite

After Retro-Brite is applied, massage the Retro-Brite around until the itme is fully covered.

2. Clean thoroughly first

Dirt and oils block the reaction. Wash plastics with dish soap and a soft brush before applying Retrobrite.

3. Even application is everything

Brush or spread evenly. Uneven layers = blotchy results. For best consistency, wrap parts in plastic wrap to keep the gel from drying out.

4. Both heat and UV light activates Retro-Brite.

Sunlight works well but heat also works. That's why we recommend 40F or above temperature. Avoid excessive heat as it can warp plastics however!

5. Rotate parts frequently

If using sunlight, rotate every 30–60 minutes to prevent uneven whitening from directional UV exposure.

6. Don’t overdo exposure time

Check every 1–2 hours. Overexposure can lead to streaking or marbeling.

7. Submerge for complex shapes

For items with lots of crevices, using a plastic bag method mentioned in #1 can be a better method.

8. Seal moisture in

Plastic wrap or a sealed container prevents evaporation, keeping the reaction active longer and more evenly.

9. Rinse and neutralize well

After treatment, rinse thoroughly with water. A mild soap wash helps remove any residue and stops the reaction.

10. Understand it’s not permanent

Yellowing can return over time due to UV and oxidation. Store restored items away from sunlight to slow re-yellowing.
