Part of knowing if your piece can be Retro-Britened is to determine what type of plastic it is. To find it out, it’s best to ask and answer the question “What types of plastic are there?”, first.
The short answer: A lot!
The long answer: We’ve narrowed down the list to 14 broad types of commonly used plastics, specifically plastics which Retro-Briters commonly come across (See Table 1). Each area of plastic may have many different variations to them (some more, some less). So, while not exhaustive, this list may help in determining what type of plastic you have just by looking at the common applications.
For most Retro-Brite applications, the type of plastics most commonly used include ABS (electronics, action figures, showers/tubs, Jacuzzi jets), polystyrene (models), and polyurethane or polyethylene foam (shoe soles).
